Book Reviews of Girls in Trouble: A Novel

Book Review: wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

This was an excellent book. It really gave me a good perspective on what a good mother is. Wonderful story that made me feel. Loved it !

Book Review: Could be a shorter story...
Summary: 3 Stars

Plus points: great characterization of the adoptive parents, child and relationship between them; great writing on how the open-adoption goes down-the-hill. Minus points: repetitive in the characterization of the parents of Sarah, the birth mother: no in-depth reasons why they want Sarah to have the baby adopted, just the same overall "keep your eyes in the future".
Another point that should be mentioned: the story follows the characters for more than 18 years - the first half of the book centers around Sarah, the "vanishing" boyfirend/father and the birth of the adoptive child - before and after. Character development in this part of the book is better strutctured than in the last half.

Book Review: A true gem of a novel!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I absolutely LOVE this book....for the complex issues it tackles, the phenomenal writing and depth of character development, and most of all for the way in which the author challenges her readers not to judge the characters for their decisions/behavoir/ideas/actions.

When a sixteen year old girl finds herself pregnant and agrees to an open adoption of her unborn baby, a web of relationships is created between herself, her parents, her child, the adoptive parents, and the father of the baby. At any given time, you don't know whom to "root for" or whose "side" you are on, which is what makes this book so brilliant- it is written in such a way that you truly feel empathy for each character and his/her circumstance. You are able to identify and understand each of the characters' point of view and their reasons for making the decisions they do.

Thsi book would make a wonderful book club selection, and I would also recommend it as required or optional reading for courses in family studies, womens studies, sociology, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this novel and can't wait to read more of Caroline Leavitt's works!

Book Review: Enjoyable read
Summary: 4 Stars

This is an enjoyable read. It's interesting and moving. It can be read quickly and is somewhat addictive.

However, that said, it is not the type of book that will change your life or that you will run out and recommend to friends. It is entertaining but not earth-shaking. The story is somewhat unoriginal but well told.

Book Review: Must Read!
Summary: 5 Stars

Caroline Leavitt has a gift. She is one of the only novelists I have encountered that can seamlessly weave together the lives of complex characters, and leave you caring about them all equally.

Girls in Trouble is an amazing exploration into family ties, and a must read for anyone looking for a great, character driven novel.
