Book Reviews of Girls in Trouble: A Novel

Book Review: Absorbing
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was slow going at first, and then I found it very thought provoking and had to see what would happen. It begins with fifteen-year-old Sara's trip to the hospital to deliver her illegitimate baby. Sara arranges an open adoption with an older couple named Eva and George. Open adoption means they can visit each other as often as they want, but it's enforceable only in Oregon, and the adoption is arranged in Massachusetts.

After the baby is born, Eva and George are less interested in seeing Sara and they start to push her away, discouraging her from visiting their house, even though they said before, "Our house is your house." "That was never really true," George comments after the baby is born. And after Sara tries to kidnap the baby, heading to Omaha on a Greyhound bus, Eva and George get a restraining order and eventually skip town.

The story is told from the point of view of all the key players: Sara, her child Anne, Anne's father Danny, Eva, and George. It is especially satisfying because you get to see the story unfold over many years. The author traces the long-term effects of the adoption on everyone. When Sara finally tracks down Anne in her new home of Boca Raton, it's hard to put the book down.

Book Review: Breathtaking novel
Summary: 5 Stars

"Girls in Trouble" is, hands-down, one of the best books I have ever read. The story is compelling, but what really sets it apart is the storyteller. Each character is richly drawn -- so richly drawn that you understand (while maybe disagreeing with) each decision the character makes. It is a rare author who can truly tell a story from so many different angles, while still maintaining a beautiful, complex story that spans many years and growth of the characters through those years.

In short, five stars just doesn't seem enough for this novel.

Book Review: It Doesn't Get Better Than This
Summary: 5 Stars

Caroline Leavitt is that rare kind of writer who crafts beautiful prose but also tells a compelling story. I became lost in Sarah's journey as she goes through her labor (described in a knock-out first chapter) makes the difficult decision of finding the right parents for her baby, and struggles to live with the consequences of her decisions.

This is the kind of story that stays for you for days, because of the realistically crafted characters, and the difficult issues raised with an open adoption. A true joy to read!

Book Review: Girls in Trouble Review
Summary: 4 Stars

Girls in Trouble is a wonderful page-turner that will leave anyone second-guessing an open adoption decision. Leavitt has created a Darwinian struggle between her characters' good intentions and feelings for one baby. It is a great read that allows the reader to dismiss the character inconsistencies and dive into the story.

Book Review: Emotional and Awesome!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am usually the type to read the silly 20-30ish female drama fictions however I found this book at my library. It's definantly different than the others that I read.

I loved it. It was very easy reading and an emotional roller coaster.

I sat up many nights telling my husband, "I'll turn the light off after this chapter" and wound up reading a few more because I couldn't put it down.

Now that I finished it, I can't wait to try other books by this Author.
