Book Review: Interesting insight into the mind of a great pianist

Glenn Gould was not simply a great musician. He was interested in so many subjects, as his broadcasts, writing, and radio documentaries demonstrate. He was. alas, also renowned for his so-called eccentricity....The letters published in this book give an interesting glimpse of the Gould's thoughts regarding his life's work(which were not intended for public comsumption,) but for those interested in the man himself there is very little concerning his personal life. This is perhaps as it should be: he was notoriously secretive about the private side of his existence. Yet he comes across as (mostly) sweet-tempered; enthusiastic; intense; erudite; and with a strange sense of humour! These letters document his collaboration with colleagues, his aspirations, and his responsive attitude to the many fans who wrote to him. But it is difficult to get the "feel" of the man's personality, unless you have already read other biographies. Perhaps to understand him well, we just need to listen to the wonderful music.
