Book Review: A Fun Book - a review of "Go Away, Big Green Monster"
Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fun book for the six and under set. [Amazon has a recommendation of 4 to 8 years of age but I would think toddlers would like it, and that the book wouldn't hold much extended interest for those over five.]
The book consists of building a monster face - page by page - and then disassembling him in the same fashion: only in reverse.
The fun comes from saying (and sometimes shouting) "YOU DON'T SCARE ME! So GO AWAY..." and one then names the parts of the face that then vanish as you turn the page.
It's all rather clever how the monster is built and un-built; and besides dealing with the obvious 'monster' aspect of the story I think it gives children a dimensional puzzle to think about.
At the end of the story the book concludes with "and DON'T COME BACK! Until I say so" which is quite nice for bedtime, particularly I would think if one had a child who was beginning to have nighttime monster problems.
Four Stars. It's not a book like "Charlotte's Web" or "If You Give a Pig a Pancake", but it is fun and educational and probably imminently useful if you have a small fry who is nervous about monsters. It is a book that tries to empower children to deal with this problem.
