Book Review: "An ethical life can be lived without religion"
Summary: 4 Stars
proclaims Christopher Hitchens in one of only a handful of innocuous statements in his atheistic thought provoking book. Packed with statements, like, "To `choose' dogma and faith over doubt and experiment is to throw out the ripening vintage and reach greedily for the Kool-Aid," Hitchens seems more intent on ruffling the feathers of members of any and all religions than on changing anyone's minds. Even some of the chapter titles have an unapologetically hackle-raising, contentious feel: Religion Kills, ...Why Heaven Hates Ham, and Is Religion Child Abuse? The "myths" of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam seem to take the brunt of the bashing, but other religions, from popular to obscure, are lambasted as well. If the author's goal, as he implies, is to change the minds of the faithful from theism to atheism, he will no doubt be sorely disappointed; however, if he hopes only to create a dialogue about religion, Mission Accomplished. Although it seems unlikely that even the most staunch atheist would agree with the book in its entirety, nowhere else will one find such a comprehensive work stuffed with information that sheds (controversial) light on some of the more troubling aspects about religion and religions. Theists who dare to partake are much more likely to feel affirmed at parts supporting their theistic position and discount those in disagreement with their opinions than to apostatize, but those who dare to partake are in for a thought-provoking ride. Great in scope but terrible in tone, god is not Great is a great read.
