Book Reviews of GoneBook Review: A thrill ride with suspense and personal emotional issues. Summary: 4 Stars
I've read 3 other Lisa Gardner books and two of them had both Pierce Quincy and Lorraine (Rainie) Connor along with Pierce'daughter a new FBI agent in the Killing Hour. I enjoyed this book very much except for some of the twists with Rainie's character.
The book begins with Rainie having nightmares and waking up alone at her and Quincy's home in the small town of Bakersville, Oregon. It is readily apparent that she and Quincy are estranged and have been so for about a week. She is haunted by a case that she and Quincy were called to consult on involving a mother and very young child being brutalized and murdered. Rainie and Quincy were also in the middle of getting ready to adopt when this new case put Rainie in a tailspin and she went back to drinking.
Rainie wakes up from her second nightmare of the night and takes off in the rain in her car. She pulls into the parking lot of a nearby bar but as she thinks about things realizes she can't go in there and drink and thus pulls out of the lot. On the way home she starts crying and her car spins around and ends up on the wrong side of the road. She feels like throwing up and opens her car door and someone sneaks up on her and there is to her, a blinding white flash. She wakes up some hours later tied up and gagged and she knows she is in a trunk or back of a car.
Meanwhile, a state trooper finds Rainie's car and due to the engine running and purse left inside, calls a Detective Carlton Kincaid with the Oregon State Police who calls in the crime scene people and more help and drives over himself. When they realize who is missing and who she is married to, they contact him and are immediately suspicious as Quincy admits he was living in a B & B and had left their home the week before. Quincy arrives on the scene and sees that Rainie's gun is also missing. He is very worried about her that she might have been drunk or wandered off. He calls his daughter Kimberly, an FBI agent in Atlanta, who also brings along her boyfriend, Mac, a State homicide detective.
As Detective Kincaid sets up a task force, the small Bakersville newspaper contacts police to let them know they have received a "letter to the editor" announcing Rainie's kidnapping and a ransom demand and further contact through a map.
The reader gets to look at this story from several angles: Rainie's, Quincy's, Kincaid's, Kimberley's plus Dougie, a 7 year old that Rainie was being a child advocate for. It is a very exciting plot with plenty of suspects, mistakes and breakthroughs by the police and plenty of suspense.
However, I felt the Rainie's personality had taken a big down turn from the previous books that she was a main character in. It was almost as if she was a totally different character than before. She had had some problems in the past but suddenly now it seemed she had no confidence and also was not as in love with Quincy as she had been. Ms. Gardner does have her character come around by the end of the book but it was still not completely satisfying.
An exciting read for the mysteries and plot -- a little less fulfilling for the characters.
