Book Review: Another by the numbers book from Kellerman
Summary: 3 Stars
In GONE, wannabe actors Michaela Brand and Dylan Meserve escape from a brutal kidnapper. Soon, their kidnapping is revealed to be a hoax. Days later, Brand is murdered. Milo Sturges gets the case, and the investigation begins and focuses on the acting school where Brand and Meserve met. Nora Dowd runs the school, and along with her brothers Billy and Brad Dowd, own a lot of property throughout LA.
If you were to strip away the characters, locations and actions of GONE, you'd find all Kellerman novels (or at least the recent ones I've read) follow the exact same framework. Something bad happens. Milo investigates and Alex follows him everywhere even though he isn't a police officer. They interview suspects. The interviews are full of witty and humorous dialogue. Then Alex and Milo guess and speculate about what could happen. They find out something that could be related to the case, and accept it as fact, not through evidence, but convenience. Then at the end of the novel, they finally discover the truth.
Fans of Kellerman and long time readers of the series complain that the romance with Robin brings the book down and complain the plot is by the numbers. I've only read the last few Milo and Delaware books, and I've read those via audio CD. The narrator adds a lot to the novel, bringing humor into the story that might not be there, or that I might not pick up on by reading.
Once again, Kellerman has Milo and Delaware make tremendous leaps of logic in their endless pages of banter and speculation. This time, a young pretty wannabe acress Tory Giacamo has gone missing. Her family from out east, says she came to LA and went to an acting school. The first victim, Michaela Brand, went to an acting school. Before you know it, Milo and Delaware assume the two are related. Another couple goes missing, and they're tied to the acting school too, without ANY evidence. But, this is typical of the Kellerman novels I've read. He writes the books, so he can make whatever he wants fit however he wants. I've accepted this, so it doesn't really take away from the novel.
Kellerman is a talented writer. The narrator of the audio book made this an entertaining story. But the truth is, Kellerman's style is not very good. Even though there is great evil going on, you never get a sense of it because it is never revealed until the final pages. Also, nothing happens in the book. Milo and Alex talk their way through it.
I'll probably continue reading Kellerman books. They are a good way to pass the time while I travel, even if they really don't make any sense.
