Book Review: "Gone for Good" is GOOD

Listening to "No Second Chance" and now "Gone for Good" on audio tape has been the most fun I've had with a novel in a while. This is weird because I held off on reading more Coben because I didn't really like "Tell No One." The plot may not be unique, and in fact shares many traits with his other novels, but Coben is such a clever writer obviously having fun telling the story.
Will Klien has just buried his mother. Before her death, in an incorent daze, she says "He's alive." This could only mean one thing. Will's brother Ken, disappeared 11 years ago from the scene of a brutal murder. Ken's blood was at the scene and he was a suspect. Will always thought his brother was dead, but now...things have changed. Will hopes his girlfriend Sheila will help him, but then she disappears. The plot takes off from there. It goes from street people to the mob to childhood friends to the FBI to dark secrets. Some plot points I guessed, maybe because I hoped the story would turn out that way. There is a sense of fun throughout the novel. Even at the darkest moments, you feel Coben is having fun telling the story. Klien's parts are told from his point of view, which is probably Coben's, and its hard to separate Klien from other leading men such as Mark Siedman from "No Second Chance." In fact, in both novels, the characters make the same point about how in movies people fighting always stand up and slug it out but in real life fights usually end up on the ground.
A lot of authors have twists and turns, but Coben keeps the twists coming right up to the very end. Everything is revealed in a natural fashion. No twist feels contrived. Coben certainly has his flaws, but for an entertaining book, pick up Gone For Good!
