Book Reviews of Good ThingsBook Review: Good Things makes a GREAT book! Summary: 5 Stars
If you asked Deidre McIntosh what she loves most about her life, she'd probably say the chaos. Life is good and full of action and purpose, but unfortunately that all changes in a matter of days.
When the network drops her Martha Stewart-esque show, "Live Simple", Deidre must learn to cope with the lost of the job that she loved.
As if it couldn't get worse, Deidre's roommate and gay best friend also decides to drop a bomb on her by letting her know that he's fallen in love and is moving in with his new beau -- effective immediatly. How do you cope when the person you lean on is leaving you at the worst time possible?
You pick up, and you dust yourself off -- though nothing presents itself as a greater challenge than starting over. When she meets Kevin Johnson, a stranger who offers to pay for her lunch and a place to stay, she finds herself jumping into the unknown headfirst.
Deciding to trust him, Deidre temporarily moves into Kevin's cabin in Wish Lake where she becomes determined to pick up the pieces of her life and start fresh. What she didn't factor in was the most complicated thing of all - LOVE.
Through all of the discoveries and the friendships she's made along the way, Deidre realizes that opening yourself up to love and assistance (you can't do it ALL on your own) is the best way to live simply.
GOOD THINGS was a fabulous novel, with wonderful characters plus pages and pages full of great lessons and a feeling of warmth and indulgence. Mia King has made her way to the top of my "Fabulous Authors" list and I can't wait for her next project!
Book Review: Good Things, good stuff! Summary: 5 Stars
Fun book! Dierdre-lifestyle guru ala Martha Stewart but younger, cuter, and funnier and not nearly as adept at the stock market-is one of those heroines that makes you wish you knew her in real life. Everything is moving along in her life pretty well, until it falls apart, of course, and Dierdre finds out if her skills making light flaky dough will pull her through when things get really tough. Loved seeing this one through to the end, and smiled the whole way. Gives chick-lit a little respect back!
Book Review: Good Things: Good Reads! Summary: 5 Stars
Like any good novel, just when you think circumstances couldn't get worse: Boom! The impulse is to turn the pages in the hope that things will flip for the good and come to fruition. And so is the case for the main character, Deidre McIntosh in Mia King's debut novel, "Good Things." One day, the 40-year-old is the belle of the ball on the Seattle airways in her pseudo-Martha Stewart TV show, and the next, she's unemployed, losing her apartment and the good life as she knows it. Fortunately, as the book progresses, amidst all the setbacks, Deidre not only does not lose herself but finds a part of herself that helps her get through it all. Ultimately, she learns that when one falls to the bottom of the barrel, you need not stop panning (or expecting) to discover gold.
Indeed, eventually Deidre does find her gold nuggets. The main one comes in the name of Kevin Johnson. Rich. Gorgeous. Sexy....Shall I say more? Things turn deliciously intriguing long before the reader indulges in the recipes (chocolate cherry crackle cookies anyone?) at the end of the book, since Kevin also happens to be the brother of Deidre's TV rival, socialite Marla Banks. Along the rocky road, she also discovers an assortment of other characters that makes one believe in silver linings and good things.
Granted some of the auspicious turns are, perhaps, way too good to really happen in life, but hey, what's wrong to believe in a bit of magic? The best thing about the book is that if you are feeling in the dumps; need a little or big lift, "Good Things" is a good thing to have on hand...along with chicken soup, if need be.

CONSUMMATE CONNECTICUT: DAY TRIPS WITH PANACHE
Book Review: Good but predictable Summary: 2 Stars
While I enjoy happy endings, this book held no surprises. A relatively formulaic story, with no twists or turns. Characters are likable but not very deep. The recipes at the back of the book look interesting, but I've seen that before in other books that I've read.
Book Review: Good idea, but not fully developed Summary: 3 Stars
Mia King's book had a good story line/plot and the recipes were really great. However, I don't think the characters, outside of Deidre's roommate and his lover, were fully developed. I think Deidre and her love interest had very little development. The lack of development didn't make me root for them and their relationship seemed implausible. Some of the story lines (such as the Marla vs. Deidre thing and the diner) needed to be fleshed out more. Mia King has the talent to write an intriguing and captivating story and I think she will blossom with her second book.
