According to the American Heritage Dictionary legend comes from the Latin adjective legenda, "for reading, to be read". It is therefore appropriate that a true Living Legend such as Helio Gracie has finally created a written manual that can truly be referred to as the definitive guide to the martial art that has elevated him to this legendary status.
Grandmaster Helio demonstrates the lessons with the assistance of his oldest son Rorion, who is also quite an accomplished martial artist. The lessons concentrate on the true essence of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu: personal self defense. Those seeking sport grappling tactics and flowery Hollywood martial arts moves may be disappointed with the book's practical self defense applications.
I was somewhat reluctant to pay $70 for a training guide when so many other Jiu-Jitsu manuals were in print for a fraction of that cost. However, the price was easily justified after my first reading of this work of art. It was quickly apparent that I was learning the proper techniques, the family history, and even the specialized Gracie diet from the point of view of the legend himself. While many of the manuals written by his descendants and students make excellent training accessories these lessons come directly from the source, directly from one of the founders of this discipline which is the true value of the book.

As a student of Gracie jiu jitsu, I have read many of the books out there purporting to be complete guides. However, most simply pick and choose the favorite moves of the author or promote a specific BJJ system, such as X guard or Rubber Guard. While those are good and have their place, GRACIE JIU JITSU is the must have book for any student of the Gracie system. For those of you learning the real Gracie jiu jitsu, not sport brazilian jiu jitsu, you must have this book. This book works perfectly as a reference guide for the Gracie fundamentals and all self defense moves, along with the stand up game, which are needed to progress to blue belt. I have found this to be invaluable in studying and fine tuning my moves outside class. Thank you, Rorion Gracie for making this book happen with your father, Grand Master Helio. I look forward to a changed life as a result of Gracie jiu jitsu.Book Review: Great book!

This is a great book. For those looking for "traditional" BJJ book, this one is not for them, but for those who are looking book of "old school" Gracie JJ this is the one. Master Helio is instructing a self defense what was the primary goal of his JJ (most of his instructions are from stand up fight).
Great images, great instructions. Highly recomended!

This book is not intended to replace videos or rolling to improve your Jiu-Jitsu. However, this book is must for any Gracie Jiu-Jitsu practioner or Helio Gracie admirer. Numerous color photos of the late great Helio Gracie in his 90's performing hundreds of moves on son Rorion. Also included are some vintage black & white photos of Helio competing in the 1930's. Excellent color photography by Thomas DeSoto. Buy it.
