Book Review: One of the best Event/Crossover Comics of recent times

Not another crossover. If you have been a comic fan since the late 80's early 90's this is a statement that should fill you with both fear and joy. Joy because we remember the big crossovers of the X-Men when Chris Claremont was there. But we also remember the Crossovers of the 90's. When Spiderman wasn't Spiderman he was a clone (an event that is still difficult to follow now). Then there are the cashcows like Civil War (somewhere in the region of 100 different comic titles) and World War Hulk where the central stories where excellent but everything else was basically superfluous.
But recently there has been a spate of decent crossovers and event comics. Messiah Complex has just finished (and I want a hardback edition now). But last year there was something special and quite unexpected. There was the Sinestro Corps.
Unusually for a crossover this only covered two ongoing titles (Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps) and a handful of one shots (Sinestro Corps Files). There was no nonsense in any other DC titles, they kept it tight and focused. The build up had been hinted at in the relevant titles with shots of people being offered yellow rings. These rings looked suspiciously like the GL's own power rings. Then we got the reveal. Sinestro was back and had formed his own twisted version of the GL Corps, simply titled the Sinestro Corps. This version of the Corps wasn't to bring hope to people but to instill fear into them and they have big plans...
Much more than this I don't really want to reveal about the story as it is a wonderful read and some of the events will play an important part in the future of the Green Lanterns and possibly the DC Universe.
So how about the story, well it is written by two extremely talented writers Geoff Johns (Green Lantern) and Dave Gibbons (Green Lantern Corps). It flits between two aspects of the Green Lantern. The main title follows the human Lanterns and forms the main crux of the story where the Corps title follows all the other lanterns and the other Corps. While this aspect is slightly lesser in some aspects, it is still a vital part of the story and some of the most import plot points are revealed in this. All in all it is extremely well told, especially the Geoff Johns sections. Jeoff Johns seems to have a really good grasp of the characters, as he has done on all the titles he has worked from, and there appears to be some real love of these characters. Dave Gibbons sections are less focused due to the nature of the title and not through any lack of writing skills.
The art is superb throughout and does a wonderful job of portraying the escalating conflict. My only real criticism is that there are one or two double spread pages to many in the Green Lantern titles. Some of them are wonderful images while others seem to be nothing more than filler.
All in all this is a wonderful story and any comic book fan should get this collection as soon as possible.
