Book Reviews of Guitar for Dummies

Book Review: A repertoire of my feelings
Summary: 5 Stars

(dramatic music starts)As a young adult, going through many changes in my emotions, and my body, I turned to the guitar, to help express myself. However, a way to start seemed impossible. But then.... I SAW THE LIGHT! Yes... Guitar for Dummies. It led the way for me to learn how to play guitar, and now 2 weeks later, I am in a band, making millions of dollars! And you can too! If you call one of our operators in the next 10 minutes! But wait! We'll throw in a guitar pick if you call in the next 5 minutes! What i'm trying to say is.... this book saved my life. Infact it brings tears to my eyes describing the beauty of this work of art called GUITAR FOR DUMMIES! (dramatic music ends)

Book Review: An excellent starting point
Summary: 5 Stars

I will have to disagree with the negative reviews posted about "Dummies". I started learning guitar with no prior knowledge of anything musical. I could not play any musical instrument, I knew absolutely nothing about the world of music theory, notation, nothing. This book explains concepts very well; the lessons are easy to follow. And, I made it past part 1 chapter 3 just just fine, thanks. You won't get stuck, unless you are illiterate. IF you want to study theory, notation and scales (which I suggest you do after this book) then start here. Dummies will introduce to PLAYING, and that is the central thesis to this book. Not too much too soon, I found too little, I understood the music theory concepts perfectly, and found myself looking to the net for further explanations. Just remember that this book is meant only as an introduction, and a brilliant job it does of it.

Book Review: Beginners Need More Than This Book To Start Playing Guitar
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is certainly not comprehensive enough for someone with no musical background to start playing - beginners WILL get stuck if they only rely on this book (starting from Part 1, Chapter 3). However, I would recommend using this book as a complement to guitar lessons from an instructor.

Book Review: Don't put it off--Buy it!
Summary: 5 Stars

Just got this book less than a week and I'm amazed at the progress. Just strumming chords is nothing compared to accompanying the CD keeping up the tempo. The key instruction for me was keeping the finger tips perpendicular to the keyboard--what a difference in producing a cleaner sound and enabling quicker chord changes. The only thing keeping you from playing more initially is the pain in the fingertips developing the calluses. (I own an acoustic guitar; it won't be so bad with an electric guitar.)

Book Review: Don't really have to be a dummy
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is well written with clear instruction. Also has a generous sprinkle of good humor that will encourage even the most timid of folks to try the guitar! Don't be shy, give it a try!
