Book Reviews of Guitar for Dummies

Book Review: I used to be awesome
Summary: 4 Stars

Now I'm still awesome. I learned some things.

Book Review: If you buy this book, buy the dvd/video as well....
Summary: 5 Stars

I must say that I bought this book about 2 1/2 weeks ago. At first I was loving it. I read up to Chapter#4, then after that I found that I was starting to get stuck by it. I didn't know if I was doing it correctly. Also it seemed like too much at one time(I was starting to lose focus). But just two days ago I happened to stumble upon the video/dvd on Amazon.com. So I bought it too,in hope of pushing me on to pursue my interest. Well it paid off, I found that the video is a better way of showing you how to do it!! I'm not saying that you can't learn from just the book alone, but if you get stuck like me, the video is out there too!! (Together they both help you out) I don't think that anybody mentioned the video here before but if they did, nuff respect due. Thank you Jon Chappell for making this video, it really helps out a lot. And folks do remember to have "FUN" learning your guitar!! Peace

Book Review: If you only buy one beginner's book, buy this one!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Basic enough for true beginners and advanced enough for those with some musical background, Guitar for Dummies is informative, humorous and practical. I bought two other beginner's books and I wish I hadn't wasted my money!! Guitar for Dummies is the only one I've used!!!!

Book Review: It works!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book two weeks before Christmas and spent about an hour a day with it and my mom's guitar. Within a week, I knew enough to play a bunch of Christmas songs, and I felt confident and amazed with how fast I had learned. I had absolutely no previous experience playing the guitar, but this book made it easy and accessible. It works!

Book Review: Lots of great information but you still need lessons
Summary: 4 Stars

I got myself a Fender Stratocaster and have been taking guitar lessons. I also bought this book. It's a great book to pick up a lots of great hints and has a wealth of good information about buying and caring for an instrument. However, this book does not replace lessons. For exzample, even though charts show you the proper fingering for the various chords, you need lessons to show you the proper positioning of you hand in order to be able to actually play the chord. If you are holding the neck of the guitar wrong, many chords are very difficult to play. Another example.. bending strings! The book can explain it but it sure is a lot easier to learn when you have a teacher showing you and practicing with you. On the other hand, the book shows chord progressions you can pick up and other techniques that, in conjunction with your lessons, you can learn. I recommend the book as a great supplement to lessons. A main reason for my recommendation is that the book is well written and is interesting to read. The fact that it can hold your interest makes it easier to learn than if the book were dry and technical in it's approach. However, I much less strongly recommend the book as your sole method of learning to play guitar. It can be done but not nearly as well as with a teacher guiding you along.
