Book Reviews of Hands on Environmentalism

Book Review: A few good points beneath a lengthy rant
Summary: 2 Stars

Hands-On Environmentalism creates a villain, a caricature, from stereotypes of ineffective bureaucrats and inflammatory activists. While well-intended, the book puts identity politics ahead of more than a decade of trends in environmentalism, and doesn't devote due attention to its own solutions.
Haglund and Still are right on a couple of themes: Clearly, a centralized bureaucracy that has little stake in success and limited local presence is a poor solution to most problems. Equally clear, those who choose environmentalism as the fleeting vehicle for adolescent rebellion generally succeed in little more than rebelling. The authors dwell too long on this, cherry-pick or presume opposing positions to disagree with, and avoid environmental issues that are well-suited to government involvement, such as environmental crime.
The authors suggest that mnay environmentalists don't care about solving problems, and that those who do care lack the knowledge, skills, and motivation to be effective. The authors also discuss several groups of people who identify problems related to natural resources and then go about solving them with science, common sense, work, and cooperation. What should we call people working for environmental quality, if not "environmentalists"?
The book includes a number of case studies, which are fairly well-researched. These vignettes summarize problems solved through community involvement, but are short on detail and (after the lengthy treatment at the beginning of the book) return to flogging government and activists.
Despite what the authors assert, environmentalism based on problem-solving, resource management, and stakeholder involvement has been taught in universities for years. Moreover, the surge in the land trust movement in the US in the decade leading up to the publication of this book underscores that environmental groups- going by a variety of names- have been implementing these strategies for some time. The authors of this book are not the only people who have ever read Aldo Leopold. I would stick with A Sand County Almanac, and pass on Hands-On Environmentalism.
