I still stand by the fact that Thomas Harris is one of the best writers alive today, but no more. It appears that his new tome, "Hannibal Rising" bears the brunt of much hurriedness, poor writing quality,( you want me to look up every other word, don't you to make sense of the sentence, Mr. Harris) and a need for much editorial revision. It is true the novel suffers with short, cryptic chapters that entice in the beginning, but falls short and appears tedious toward the novel's end. The novels "Red Dragon" and "The Silence of the Lambs" are Harris' best works; make no mistake about that. He seems to be cashing in on a once proud and evil character, and we await Hannibal's maturation into the monster he is. And we wait, and we wait, and we wait. We find what happened to his sister and why he is the way he is, but it is not enough. The "Mind Palace(s)" mentioned in the novel "Hannibal" are toyed with here and tossed aside, with the reader left holding a bag of questions still unresolved. Harris seems intent on getting rich quickly(he is already rich) from this novel, and the book reads boringly, especially at the end. The young Hannibal has glimpses of brilliance we get to see, but Harris doesn't finish some of his ideas, and we are left with a loss. I have always thought he would bring back another FBI agent to capture Lecter and kill him once and for all. That would be a superb novel and finish to this character. But Harris has not done so, and this novel is dissapointing. It will be interesting to see how the movie is handled, and supposedly Qong Li plays Lady Murasaki in the film version. Why not more of her and how she met Hannibal's uncle? Puzzling and silly at times, toying and boring as well. A dissapointment.
