Book Review: Not in love with this book

I bought this book to learn Civil 3D from the perspective of a fairly expert CAD operator who wished to learn Civil 3D for shall we say "job insurance." I was hopeful that it would serve both as an introduction to Civil Engineering for the drafter and a guide to using Civil 3D.
As an introduction to Civil Engineering for the drafter, I have to give it a zero. You can't really learn civil drafting from this book although for sure if you do all the exercises you'll learn something about Civil Engineering. The book does not demonstrate how to create a set of civil drawings for a typical civil project and in fact avoids that sort of material as if afraid of incurring some liability or of giving away some "trade secrets."
I was also hopeful that the text would be readable enough that I could absorb most of the material through study of the text alone. The truth is that the bulk of the material is step-by-step exercises that you need to do sitting at a computer with the book and terminal in front of you.
With 820 pages to the book, you can well imagine there is a lot of material. Because much of it is in the form of interactive exercises, I'm guessing it could take weeks, even months to do them all. You may not get each exercise the first time through, either, and repeating exercises can also lengthen the time it takes to work through this book. Needless to say, plan to spend a lot of time if you want the full benefit of the book's lessons.
Much of the purely textural material in Harnessing Civil 3D goes for explaining Civil 3D's unbelievably baroque settings and extraordinarily complicated interface. The author's dense, pedantic approach to the subject doesn't relieve the reader of as much of the burden of unraveling it as it should. Reading it you will surely think, "There has to be a better approach than this." In fact, there is and if all you need is an introduction to C3D, you are much better off working through the tutorials and guides that come with the software. If afterwards you feel you still need further instruction or just want some additional practice material, Harnessing Civil 3D could be a good choice for you.
