Book Review: Fairly Interesting

The unauthorised biography 'Harvey Keitel - The Art of Darkness' by Marshall Fine charts Keitel's life and film career from the beginning to his most recent films. It presented itself as a fairly interesting read for a reader who previously knew no details of Keitel's life and provided a good chronological account of the films that he has been involved in and the people that he collaborated with during this process. The book also contains amusing anecdotes of events that happened during his life. However, in terms of providing an insight to the man behind the character, the book did not seem to provide immense depth. The ideas on this subject were repetitive and never seemed to offer any more understanding. However, whether this was a product of the writers lack of analysis or the elusiveness of Keitel himself is unknown. Personally, I believe it is the latter. In conclusion, as a book on Keitel and the way he works in film it is certainly adequate. Just don't expect to know any more about the man by the time you have finished reading it.
