Book Review: "Haunted" by Chuck Palahniuk
Summary: 5 Stars
This is the second book by Chuck Palahniuk that I've read so far (the first was "Diary"). It seems that Palahniuk has shifted from focusing around just one central character like his previous books (or so I'm told). Now he's got a whole ensemble of characters with names that somewhat describes them (Saint Gut-Free, Miss America, Agent Tattletale, Miss Sneezy, Chef Assassin, Reverend Godless, and so fourth). As everyone mentioned, it's a novel with an underlying story followed by many short stories and poems.
The main plot of the story is a bit... well, it's not very plausible. Most of you may find it stupid. "Writers' Retreat" is what it's called. Many people go there, abandoning their "normal" lives to write a good story. But one by one, people die, but at least live long enough to tell their stories.
Aside from the deaths, cannibalism, grotesque setting, and the fact that these characters love suffering to try to gain fame (yeah... you read that right), the short stories are a major treat. Although most of the stories are grotesque in their own ways, it's often humorous and just plain great writing. I won't say much, but... aw heck, just read 'em. "Guts" is famous in these reviews, and although it's the first containing such nightmarish and disturbingly hilarious descriptions, don't forget about the rest involving "foot jobs" and anatomically correct dolls being used for one's pleasure (there's more, but that'd be ruining the "fun").
This book is definately worth reading just for the short stories alone. The main plot is far-fetched, over-the-top, unbelievable, but it does say something: how far people would go to become famous. I wonder: would any of you do such horrific acts just to become famous? I think not, but perhaps that's how Palahniuk sees our society nowadays, and exaggerates gravely that it becomes absurdly hilarious and downright true.
Very enjoyable reading.
