Book Review: Abridgement Too Far...

A thrilling serial in which Radio 4 attempt to abridge a 444 page novel into a 2 hour 40 minute dramatisation. Will they manage to get enough of the novel into the play? Sadly, no. This is far too superficial, and it reduces a dense, psychologically complex, bitterly witty murder mystery into a pointless ramble along the seashore... only the bare bones of the plot are left, and no one reads Dorothy Sayers for a simple puzzle story. Her wicked humour and musings on life & society are integral aspects of her work, and it is bizarre to adapt one of her novels and leave all this rich material on the cutting room floor. I also found the voices used by many of the actors to be intensely annoying, surely they don't need to sound like such complete twits. Although I love Sayers' novels and I love Radio 4's dramatisations of classic murder mysteries, and I spend far more than I can afford collecting them, I disliked this intensely and do not think I will buy any other Radio 4 Sayers dramatisations. I shudder to think what would happen to Gaudy Night, say, if it was subjected to the off hand treatment they have meted out to Have His Carcase. It's a real pity because if they were dramatised seriously, with respect shown to the text of the book, and without irritating acting, they would be a real treat...
