Book Review: I Can See Why People Like It, But....
Summary: 3 Stars

With all the raving my fellow reviewers have done about this book, you'd think it was God's gift to software engineering. But it has some downsides. Firstly, although the patterns it teaches you are useful for all OO languages, the implementation of them and some other knowledge this book uses is Java-specific. OK, so needed a real language they needed for their examples (and chose Java), but there's barely a nod towards other OO languages' perspectives on the patterns. Then there's the writing style. I don't have any problem with the casual nature of it, but for a start it's not nearly as much fun as it thinks it is. And it's really waffly - if you think this review's going on a bit, you should try this book where pages pass while imparting a few sentences' worth of information. I flipped through it very quickly. On top of all of this, some of the explanations are vague almost to the point of being misleading. Eventually I got into the habit of always checking Wikipedia's entry on each new pattern for a second opinion. Having said all of that, it taught me a few useful design patterns without being dry or a hard read, so it's not bad at all - just don't be expecting literary perfection. If you're using Java and like a book to talk you through this stuff like an actual person talking to you, there's a lot going for it.

Book Review: Top drawer!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! This is a top-class book. I love the comic-book feel to it, this makes me want to read it and I found it easier to understand what it was telling me.

Plus, the bird on the cover is HOT!

Book Review: Free your mind .... the Rest will Follow
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been devloping in java for the last few years and honestly can tell that this book helps you stretch your mind on the core patterns that have secretly lived inside Java.

You can get around and survive in a Java Job with J2ee Patterns for which there are plenty of examples on the web.

This book however talks about the CORE java patterns which we will definetely need to write good OO Code. I tried out the examples (downloaded from the website ) , on eclipse and with debug statements on , you can run the test cases and see the real power of interfaces and abstraction at work. Most other books use Swing as an example, and I am no good at swing.

If you intend to get a grip on the power of java patterns, it will have to be hands on and this book does just that.

My only wish is that I could nt get this book early in my programming life. I could have written much better And neater OO Code.

But mind you , this book will take time to really sink in. If you have a day job , then completing one chapter will take a few days ( considering that your span of attention after work is going to be only max of 30 minutes). If you steadily plod through the easy to learn examples , it will free your mind .

I will choose this book over my first girlfriend. ....Enough said.

Book Review: Simple, fun and awsome!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is by far the best book I have read on design patterns. The book is a fun read and the heavy use of pictures and annotations links the presented material to mental images in your head, making it much easier to recall a design pattern by name.

Go get it!

Book Review: Understanable
Summary: 5 Stars

This book explains clearly how and when to apply design patterns. Its not over complicated or cluttered with UML diagrams. Really impressed with this.
