Book Reviews of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

Book Review: Everyone is happy in our house!
Summary: 5 Stars

Our fully breastfed son slept through the night in his own cot from 6 months, but only until 5am or 5.30am. The morning waking got earlier and earlier until he was waking at 4am ready to start the day at 12 months of age. I bought the book after reading reviews and extracts online. After just a few days our lives changed! We brought our son's bedtime back to 6pm instead of 7pm and enforced naps at 9am and 1pm - now he sleeps until 6am or even 7am regularly!! He is happier, more interested in the world, eats better and rarely crys or fusses. Buy this book and enjoy your childs company even more...

Book Review: saved my sanity
Summary: 5 Stars

After trying Ferber, reading Mindell, and considering Sears, I turned to Dr. Weissbluth's book, and I have been recommending it to my friends ever since. The coverage of napping, support for breastfeeding, and clear age-by-age presentation are what set Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child apart. (I also found Ferber & Mindell's checking routine to be counterproductive.) If only I had read it sooner, it would have saved us a lot of crying and sleepless nights. Now that I follow Dr. Weissbluth's advice, I have a very happy, well-rested baby.

Book Review: What a lifesaver.
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the first edition of this book while pregnant with my first baby and hearing that concerns about sleep would rule our lives as soon as he was born! This book has seen us through the successful sleep training of both our sons, and I have passed it on to friends who had given up all hope, only to find that the methods really work. Informative, scholarly and authoritative without being patronising. Very useful data on sleep patterns and duration. Makes you feel that you understand the biology and psychology of children's sleep habits, and thereby empowers you to do the right thing for all the family, and encourage your babies / children to obtain - as it says on the cover - healthy and happy (and long, uninterrupted) sleep patterns.

Book Review: I wouldn't have survived without this book
Summary: 5 Stars

I can honestly say that this book has probably been the best book that I have ever bought. I am still guarding it with my life and often referring back to it. My son has really beneffited from everything I have read and I dread to think what his first year would have been like if I hadn't read it and put into practice what Dr Marc says. It makes so much sense too and like the other reviewer said, I had no idea how much sleep these babies need and probably would have only let him get half the sleep that is required. This Doctor deserves to be a millionaire as I am sure there are many families out there who owe him a huge Thank You. We certainly do.

Book Review: authoritative advice, common sense, and intuition
Summary: 5 Stars

this is a wonderful and illuminating book. I had no real idea of the importance of sleep, except that I wanted some! Dr Weissbluth is authoritative in his presentation of extensive experience and research in the field of sleep, reassuring and fascinating - he tells you how it is, and observing my child and others has almost always backed up the facts. But there were enough anecdotes to stop the book being dry. He has carefully built the 'facts' into constructive advice for you at each stage of your child's development, but although this advice is quite specific at times, it is not prescriptive and takes into account all styles of parenting, including the 'family bed'. This is not a sleep training manual - it's more subltle than that - and it is not a prescriptive routine description (like Gina Ford's book). It is not the best laid out of books, and takes a few readings to get the subtler points - mine is now well thumbed, but the important thing is that his advice WORKS for us - our child is well rested, happy and has slept 12 hour stints from 3 months, as well as good naps during the day. The more sleep your child has, the better s/he will sleep - "it's not logical, it's biological".
