Book Reviews of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

Book Review: Advocates Cruelty and Abuse
Summary: 1 Stars

Here is yet another example of a parenting text incorrectly assuming that what is best for the parents is best for the child. The author attempts to frighten parents into letting their babies "cry it out" claiming that their brains require a certain type and amount of sleep. These assumptions are not based on any valid research. Ignored by the author is the question of your child's psyche that will be damaged because he feels rejected by the people he is genetically programmed to trust. Every parent must be free to make his/her own choices about how their baby should sleep and not be dictated to by self-proclaimed experts. Read this book if you are curious, but read something else too that offers another approach and let your instincts decide.

Book Review: The most useful parenting book available!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book really stresses the importance of sleep for the development of a young child. There is general information on healthy sleep and sleep problems as well as very specific information on various types of sleep difficulties and disorders. There are separate chapters about sleep and sleep requirements for various ages and stages. The author also includes case histories to show how his methods work with different personalities and problems. His method is also very straight forward and easy to follow. This book is a definate must for all parents.

Book Review: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Parents
Summary: 5 Stars

Learn to instill good sleep habits in your child before a problem develops. Dr. Weissbluth explains the value of nighttime sleep and naps to your child's development and behavior, then provides a guide from week one to the adolescent years.

If you follow Dr. Weissbluth's advice early on, proper sleep and napping habits will settle in before the age of four months. Followed properly, your child will never be forced to "cry it out" since you will learn to recognize and respect the signs of fatigue before your child is overtired.

If your child seems fussy or wild, read this book now! Sleep deprivation is a torturer's technique--don't let it be a parenting practice. You'll be happy to discover the delight a well-rested child brings!

Book Review: I buy this as a baby gift for every new parent I know.
Summary: 5 Stars

Our five month old went from taking no naps or a single short nap and going to bed at 11 at night to taking two 75 minutes and sleeping from 7p.m. until 5:30a.m. with one feeding during the night (he's 10 months old now and sleeps all the way through). We actually didn't have to go through the crying-it-out ordeal, he fell right into the pattern once we knew what his natural sleep pattern was. I felt awful that we must have been depriving him of sleep. We didn't know we had a sleep problem until we read this book. We thought our son was just high-energy and didn't need as much sleep as other kids. We can tell the difference now that we see a well-rested little guy. We thought he was pretty happy before but now he's "happy"-content not hyper-excited/ over-tired and he has a longer attention span. I was reluctant to read yet another sleep book because there are so many conflicting theories but I was immediately impressed by the author's credentials and by the research behind the theories (though I'm not any kind of expert on statistical validity, etc.) I hope you'll read this book and that it improves the quality of your child's life and your life as much as it did ours.

Book Review: This really works. All of our friends are amazed!
Summary: 5 Stars

We meet Dr. Weissbluth at a seminar for new parents. He soon became our daughters pediatrician and we naturally got the book at his recommendation. The techniques and the approach to sleep worked very well for us, but we did not know how well. When we visited with friends and family with new children we immediately became aware of how good we had it. Most parents will tell you that there child sleeps through the night, it is a matter of pride. What they won't tell you is the ritual they go through to get the child to sleep, or how sensitive the child is to that ritual, or that the child goes to bed at 11:00 p.m. and wakes up at 5:30 a.m. or that naps are the result of passing out. We put our daughter to bed at 8:30 p.m. and she wakes up around 8:30 A.M. she takes one nap between noon and 3:00 depending on what we are doing and she will sleep from 1.5 to 3 hours. She is very pleasant and enjoys anyone she meets. This really works. All of our friends are amazed! They constantly tell us how lucky we are. That's when I tell them about the book. I ought to get commission on these I have given away over 20 copies to friends and family not to mention all the referrals.
