Book Review: Ignores baby's other needs
Summary: 3 Stars

This book was recommended to me by a neighbor who thought it was strange that my four month old son didn't take naps every day. According to Dr. W., my son should have been taking two or three long naps every single day, and if he didn't, then I was being a bad parent by depriving him of one of his most basic needs. (He seemed healthy and happy to me, but I'm not the sleep expert.)

Now, eight months and two "unsuccessful" attempts at this method later, I fully understand that MY baby never needed all those naps that Dr. W. says babies need. I spent so much time worrying and trying to get him to fall asleep when he wasn't tired, because I believed that Dr. W. must know what's best for my baby. Of course that is wrong. He doesn't know my baby and apparently has never met one like him.

I agree with Dr. W. that sleep is important, and that parents should not deprive their children of needed sleep just because naptime may be an inconvenience for the parents. But babies also need to play, explore, eat, and cuddle...and parents need to follow their hearts to give their babies a customized blend of all of those things.

Book Review: Baby sleeps, you sleep and the entire family is happy!
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend gave us this book and we set it aside as Dr. W. believes that until a child is four months old, natural sleep rythms guide napping and nighttime sleep. We picked it up when our daughter was three months old and have followed his advice to the letter. Our daughter, at nearly 8 months, takes two, 2-3 hour naps, goes to bed at 7:30 and sleeps until 6 or 6:30. She rarely awakens in the night, and if she does we can link it back to poor napping.

Dr. W's advice that young infants need to nap every 2-3 hours works so well that our daycare provider borrowed the book to deal with a child whose parents said he didn't need naps at eight months old. (This little boy demanded to be held all day and fussed even while being held.) Now the little boys naps along with our daughter. And our daycare provider has become the consultant to other daycare providers in the area. She's bought her own copy of the book and believes it works. So do we.

We are so thankful someone gave us this gift. Otherwise we would have done as so many couples do and just hauled our daughter around with us as we lived our actives lives, allowing her to catnap in the car or stroller when she had a chance.

Every few months we pull the book out to see what stage we are likely to face next and what Dr. W. recommends. He hasn't been wrong yet. Plus, since our baby sleeps so much, her immunities remain strong and she has only had two colds since beginning full-time daycare in September.

Now this is our gift of choice for our friends. It is our gift to their baby and to them. Well rested parents make for happy parents!

Book Review: An INDISPENSABLE guide to your child's healthy sleep.
Summary: 5 Stars

I was given this book by a friend just after my son was born, and I don't know what I would have done without it. Dr. Weissbluth explains what healthy sleep is and how to acheive it. He describes how to work with an infant's sleep patterns, remedy sleep problems and "teach" a baby to sleep. His suggestions are specific to different stages of life. My child is almost 2 years old and has slept through the night since he was 8 weeks. His sleep schedule runs like a clock and his naps are regular and dependable. He is content and healthy because I have developed and protected his schedule. I learned how to work with him to enable him to sleep for his own health and for mine. I continue to use this book, as it spans childhood sleep needs through adolescence. I have given many copies as baby shower gifts! I recommend this book to anyone with a child.

Book Review: This is the best how-to book I've ever read.
Summary: 5 Stars

Dr. Weissbluth offers some very practical advice in this book that is time-tested and really works. I read the first edition of this book in 1986 (first child) we followed his advice and had a wonderful experience. I read it again with the 2nd child (1988) and I have just finished reading the new addition again (3rd child). If you love your child and want whats best for her/him: read this book, follow its simple straight forward advice, and begin enjoying your child and watching him/her flourish.

Book Review: Could've been titled 'Happy Parents, Fun Baby'
Summary: 5 Stars

Please come to our house. Please come see our happy baby. And her happy parents. You're all invited.

A baby that sleeps is a baby that's alert and smiley when she's awake. This happy alertness lets baby's learn about the world. Wouldn't you do anything to give your baby the gift of intelligence? The first 3 years are everything to a child's development, all experts agree. Do what you can, right?

Dr. Weisbluth is our doctor here in Chicago and we are lucky to have his wisdom firsthand. Luckily, it's wisdom he shares. Trust this man, he knows his stuff. We have living proof.

Everytime we see him my wife gives him a big hug. And I'm tempted myself. A happy baby means a happy mommy. And therefore...a happy daddy. (That's me.) Ye-ah, Baby! Thanks Doc.
