Book Reviews of Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your WayBook Review: TAYLOR BARES HIS HEART & SOUL [4? stars] Summary: 4 StarsThis autobiography shows the deeper side of Taylor Hicks - and not just his goofy showmanship that was his signature on "American Idol." In this book, he neither sugar-coats his growing-up years nor does he give his readers the false impression that the road to fame is an easy one (as he recounts his times as a struggling musician before his big break on "Idol"). In this book, he explains his philosophy toward making music, why he's never dyed his hair, why he dances goofy, etc. In short, his message is: 1) Don't give up on your dreams - even if others try to convince you otherwise, and 2) you need to work at it and not expect it to be dropped in your lap. Good advice for anyone trying to break into the music field. Overall, an excellent read which kept my attention all throughout the book. As a compantion to this book, I would also purchase Taylor Hicks' self-titled debut CD. Both are highly recommended.
Book Review: Heart Full of Soul Summary: 5 Stars"Heart Full of Soul" by Taylor Hicks is a tremendous true story of the struggle of a young man to fullfill his destiny. It is both funny and sad as Taylor Hicks presents a very honest account of himself, his mistakes, and eventually a dream come true. Hurricane Katrina was a turning point is his life. His constant drive to follow his soul music took years of determination. I've read it three times and wish there would be a follow up book.
Book Review: Gift for a friend Summary: 5 StarsI purchased this book as a Christmas gift for a friend who is a big Taylor Hicks fan. She absolutely loved the book. She said it was very good reading about her favorite Idol.
Book Review: AWESOME! Summary: 5 StarsThis book was delivered promptly and in perfect condition. An absolute delight to give as a gift to my daughter. Thank you for being so expeditious.
Book Review: Soul Thang Summary: 4 StarsTaylor Hicks, Hoover (suburban Birmingham) Alabama native, beat the odds and stereotypes and became the winner of American Idol Season 5. Members of his AI Fan Base dubbed themselves the "Soul Patrol." You either "get" Taylor or you don't. I do. and Taylor's singing voice (without the drawl) reminds me of old college flame for whom I still have the hots THUD. But I digress.
Faithful SPer that I am, I have both the printed book and the audio version. Folks of the SP Boards often said that we would raptly listen to Taylor sing anything, including the Birmingham phone book. Listening to him read this obviously heavily ghost written bio is kinda like that. Taylor struggles with reading his own story, at times with irksome, misplaced pauses - like when he talks about his idol, Ray Charles', classic crossover album *Modern Sounds in Country [beat] [beat] and Western Music* - and distracting emphasis on words not warranting emphasis. Nonetheless, ghostwriter David Wild and Taylor offer interesting insights (sometimes teasingly so - with no follow-through or full disclosure.)
At the end of his reading, Taylor tells the listener this was by Taylor Hicks, LLC. LLC? (For those of you who didn't go to Law School, that's Limited Liability Corporation.) Our guy from Hoover is now an LLC?!? Aha! That somewhat explains the overglitzification of his semi-biographic song *Soul Thing* from his pre-Idol self-produced *Under The Radar* CD to the Big Time American Idol/19 "debut" * Taylor Hicks * CD.
Mr. Clark, I rate the book 5 stars for the Soul Patrol 3.5 for everybody else.
