Book Reviews of Heart-Shaped BoxBook Review: Awesome Ghost story Summary: 4 Stars
I found an awesome ghost story. Craddock is such a vindictive ghost. I was holding on trying to figure out who will help them. But there was one thing that bothered me...long about chapter 39 or so the Mustang was hit by Craddock's truck and the airbag was deployed. This was wrong on many levels but the on that hit me was...it's a '65 Mustang that he bought from a roadie. My point in spite of his fixing it up, '65 Mustangs don't have airbags. Generally not a thing you add to a '65 Mustang. Other then that I highly recommend the book, it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Book Review: Boring Summary: 2 Stars
A very slow paced story with uninteresting characters and not in the least bit scary. Don't waste your time with this one. I gave this 2 stars as opposed to one star because of the musical references through out the book and I liked the names of the lead character's dogs.
Book Review: Boring Summary: 1 Stars
It took everything I had to get to the end of this book, in spite of one of its good points; which was its relevance to the spooky nuances of the Internet. Entirely cliche and predictable. The behaviors of the characters were enough to make you want to rip out the pages and scratch the surface for more depth, or maybe scratch your eyes out. I have never provided a review for Amazon but feel it is my duty to help others avoid several hours of wasted time. I would recommend that you skip this book and not be drawn in by its only other good point... a catchy title.
Book Review: C for Effort Summary: 2 Stars
I picked up this book with a great anticipation of getting lost in a good
ghost story, but I was soon disappointed. The author has an aging rock star named "Jude" buy a suit that was worn by a dead man. It comes in a black, heart-shaped box. Okay, fine, but then Jude finds another heart-shaped box from his childhood. For me, that was too many heart-shaped boxes for one story.
Also, and more importantly, the reader is introduced to the ghost too soon. The story needed more set work. Very early in the story the rock star walks right past the ghost, who is sitting in a chair. Jude tries to ignore him. That's too close, too soon, and it just didn't work for me.
I'm reminded of the sequel to the "Amityville Horror." I liked that story, but in the sequel, the woman is levitating on the second page, or so it seemed. No build up.
Lastly, I didn't find one character that I cared about. Believe it or not, that's important in a story. In Steven King's "Duma Key," I cared about the main character, and that kept me reading.
Joe Hill's novel may grab some readers, but I have to agree with the
other negative reviews.
Book Review: Cliched B-Horror Novel Summary: 2 Stars
The first night that I started reading this book I made it through about 50 pages and I had nightmares. It was that creepy. Unfortunately, after this point the cliched b-horror elements started to pile up one after another. Dream sequence, check; ouija board pulled out at random to communicate with the dead, check; hypnotic visions of past events to explain back-story, check; and so forth. Overall, a really poor book that I do not recommend.
