An eminent Moscow professor of 'regenerative science' befriends a stray dog in order to perform a ground-breaking experiment - the transplant of a human pituitary gland and human sex organs into a canine body. But the experiment goes disastrously wrong as the man with 'the heart of a dog' develops into a bizarre, headstrong creature with his own agenda. The professor's neatly ordered and respectable world is turned on its head, until he decides that enough is enough.... Bulgakov's surreal horror-comedy can be read as a damning tale of Stalin's Russia, and as a warning to the genetic engineers of today.
