Book Review: 2 Star Plot, 5 Star Writing
Summary: 2 Stars
The writing is good, but the plot isn't. If you read Something Borrowed, then you've already read this book. The characters are different and the circumstances/setting are different, but the plot is almost identical. It makes me wonder if Giffin is/has been the cheating spouse; she knows that character so well and writes it so authoritatively. The characters - Tessa, Valerie, Ross, and Charlie are all intertwined through a tragic accident, and become even more intertwined as personal relationships develop between them. The thing Giffin does so well is to make you genuinely care for every character - the cheater, the victim, the families, etc - they have such authenticity that it's quite nice to read. There is no doubt that her characters are well-developed and well-rounded; they are emotional and bring you right into their world. You almost feel sorry for the cheating people and start to justify their actions. The story is told back and forth in chapters that focus on the two females: Tessa and Valerie. We see each of their viewpoints in their chapter and further the story along. The quality of this book is good, but how many times over can this author write the same story? That's why it gets 2 stars from me - there is too much similarity between this book and her others, especially Something Borrowed, and to make it worse, she `borrows' characters from that book in this one as well.
