Book Reviews of Heidi (Puffin Classics)

Book Review: Another children's classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Heidi - the tinist girl with the largest, most selfless and innocent heart. Heidi is one of those characters who seems just too good to be true (the fact that Shirley Temple played her in the movie version shows that everyone agrees on this point) but she is so endearing and fun that you forget how "good" she is and just enjoy her. I imagine that I would find living in the Alps with a quiet old man, an ignorant goatherd, a blind old woman and a passel of goats to be a rather tame existence, but through Heidi's eyes it seems the epitome of the good life. Heidi is a model of childish virtue (like Sara Crewe of A Little Princess and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm) but appealing and inspiring, rather than boring and prosy. She is truly a good soul, and her story is a must-read for every young and old girl alike.

Book Review: HEIDI the extraordinary
Summary: 5 Stars

Heidi is a very calm girl. Her aunt, Detie, took care of her for a long time and now she wants to take her to her grandfather (Uncle Alp). Everyone in the village of Dorfli is very scared of him. They don't think that Detie should take Heidi there, but she does it anyways. Uncle Alp takes her inside the hut. Heidi meets Peter and they become friends. After two years of living there, her aunt, Detie, comes back and takes Heidi back to Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, Detie gives Heidi away to a rich family. One child named Clara becomes friends with Heidi. Mrs. Rottenmeir is the governess. She thinks there are ghosts in the house. She calls the doctor to come and stay overnight to find out if it is really true. He sees Heidi sleepwalking and says she must return back to her grandfather. That morning, Sebastian takes Heidi back to her grandfather. Summary: 5 Stars Since the first chapter, I have enjoyed every single one of young Heidi's adventures described on this treasured book. Since the day I started reading it, I could not put it down, definitely a lovely book to read outside in the fresh air, so you can enjoy what makes it so beautiful, the feeling of freshness and beauty that it awakes in you.

Little Heidi is a five-year-old girl who is sent to live with her grandfather, Uncle Alp, high, high in the European Alps after having been poorly taken care of by the careless Detie, sister to one of the girl's parents. Uncle Alp at first seems to not want the girl's company and eagerly awaits the day in which she'll be sent away again, but those feelings vanish for completely when he and Heidi begin spending more and more time together. Heidi has managed to quickly make new friends, beginning from Peter, the naughty young shepherd and his family, Bridget, his mother and Grannie, his old, blind grandmother. Each of them spend wonderful days in the mountains with Heidi's pleasant company. However, things in that part of the alps look dark the day Detie does return to take Heidi away to a family far away in a town named Frankfurt. Heidi is taken to the family of a lonely 12-year-old girl named Clara Sasemann, an invalid who longs for company as her own life is boring and unexciting. Heidi longs to go back to the alps and is promised to be able to go back, but staying there for a few weeks, Heidi befriends the kind girl Clara as long as some of the house servants and serves as a good challenge for the strict Miss Rottenmeier. Heidi's return to the mountains brings happiness to everyone but more happiness is to come when she receives the visits of her old friends.

This book, written by Johanna Spyri is a true masterpiece and can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. It offers lots of fun-filled episodes as well as very lovable characters. What I found more thrilling was Mrs. Spyri's simple writing style which really helped me understand the story without feeling lost or with the need to re-read. The story is told beautifully and it lets you feel the viewpoints of each of the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone, young and old.

Book Review: This is the best book ever written
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the most precious story ever written, and the translation is wonderful. I read it several times a year, even though I'm almost 35 years old.

Although Johanna Spyri wrote many stories for children, none of them can even come close to Heidi.
