Do you like fantasy and breathtaking stories? If you do, then Heir Apparent, by Vivian Vande Velde, is the book for you! It is about a girl who must win a virtual reality video game or suffer a fatal overload.
The book is set in an American city where Giannine Bellisario, a fourteen-year-old girl, receives, a fifty dollar gift certificate to Rasmussen Enterprises, an arcade where players can fully be immersed in a video game. Unfortunately for her, the Citizens to Protect Our Children, or CPOC, is protesting outside Rasmussen Enterprises. Giannine decides to go in anyway and meets a loony receptionist who compares video games to soups. She chooses to play Heir Apparent, but while she is playing, the CPOC ruins the equipment for the game. Giannine has to win or she will have a fatal overload.
Giannine faces many dangers during the game and is required to complete several thrilling tasks including finding a stolen treasure, reciting a good poem for the head- chopping statue and defeating the man-eating dragon. She discovers some untrustworthy people in the game, befriends two wizards and a witch and joins the "Sisterhood of One" with Sister Mary Ursula.
