Book Reviews of Hello Baby!Book Review: Okay choice for a new sibling Summary: 3 Stars
My son is 2 1/2 and I felt this book was a little more graphic than I would have liked for his age. I know this manufacture states for 4+ but I would have kept it if the illustrations were different because he did understand the context just fine and seemed to enjoy it.
Book Review: One of our favorites! Summary: 5 Stars
We have a lot of new baby books, and this was one of our favorites. It gives a lot of information without being overwhelming. It also does not introduce the negative side of siblings. I didn't want to put ideas into our son's head before the baby came. I figured he'd discover the negatives on his own and we could find books to address them later, if needed. Our son was 27 months when his sister was born and we read this for a few months before that. I think it helped, and he's adjusted quite well. We've bought it for a few friends having a second child too. Highly recommended!
Book Review: Our favorite "baby is coming" book Summary: 5 Stars
Our 2 1/2 year old didn't understand when we talked about a baby sister, so we bought three books about new babies. This one is our favorite and his. First, the little boy has toys just like he does, so he identifies with him. Second, it has great pictures of baby eating, playing, crying, and sleeping, all of which he understands when we explain it. Third, it has the preparation story that we really wanted - mommy and son visiting the doctor, son hearing the baby's heartbeat, and most importantly, baby in mommy's tummy. He seems to understand what we mean now when we talk about the baby being in mommy's tummy (he used to say, "I have a baby in my tummy too!", but now talks about mommy's tummy having such a big baby).
We are very happily surprised that he understands so much more, and is better prepared for what will be happening soon for our family. And he asks to read it all the time!
Book Review: Perfect preparation for a new sibling Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased this book for my 21 month old son (and only child). After reading all the reviews on several books, my hope was to find a product that would help introduce the concept of adding a new baby to our family. I wanted something that touched on both Mom's expanding waistline and what to expect after baby comes home.
My son loves to read with me. He usually takes a while to warm up to new books, however this one caught on right away with him. We read it several times a day. I imagine that as others have stated, it'll be a favorite long after his sibling is born.
There isn't anything I would criticize about this book (other than I was too cheap to buy the hard cover version and I'm not sure how long the paperback will last with all the use).
I like the traditional family approach the author uses(mother, father, big brother and baby sister and grannie) and the mention of nursing (compared to books that state "baby needs a bottle"). In addition, the big brother plays an integral role in the care of the baby rather than taking a back seat after the new baby's introduction.
As far as criticism I've seen of the detail of this book . . . We don't read all the details on the chart that shows baby's growth, but simply point out which picture most closely matches his sibling's current development. He grabs another pamphlet that details even more and goes through that when we get to this page. He enjoys showing Mom what his baby sister looks like.
There are some pages that are kind of wordy (like the explanation of the baby growing in the womb and the umbilical cord). However, I think if this had been pared down, it would limit the audience the book reaches. I'd rather give my son too much detail (it's NOT graphic) than leave him questioning the lack of information (as an older child may do).
This book teaches concepts I would've neglected to cover with him (such as the umbilical cord stump and soft spot on baby's head). I certainly wouldn't shy away from the book for younger audiences.
As I mentioned, this book provides the detail that children need but doesn't provide too much graphic information. For example, it references "going to the hospital to help our baby be born" with no explanation of how baby's are born.
I would highly recommend this book for both younger and older children.
Book Review: Perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
This was simply perfect for my inquisitive 4 year old when I was pregnant with our second!
It covered everything from doctor visits while pregnant to how a baby grows in Mommy and finally to what goes on when baby first comes home. It was easy to 'simplify' the text to my son's level and simply open a dialog about the illustrations compared to what was going on with our family.
My son loved looking at the different illustrations and comparing them to his own baby pics (like the cord stump...it was great for him to be prepared about that!) and that in the storey it was the big brother sharing one of his old baby toys that finally stops his new sister from crying. His baby sister is now 8 months old and he still loves looking at this book and talking about when she was in my tummy.
