"I know now why men light fires."
War is messy. Combat is misery on a grand scale, yet it is the most exhilarating thing that the human condition can experience. It is good, evil, spiritual, and enlightening; yet it is best forgotten or buried deep in the dark recesses of the human mind not to be dwelled upon. We detest it yet we seek it out. It makes one whole while it rips at the very fabric of the human soul. It binds men together as it isolates their inner most feelings. It is horrible and muddles the mind, yet brings clarity of thought to a razor's edge. This is what it means to be a combat soldier, and these are some of the intense emotions that Mr. Leckie artfully relays in his wonderfully written Helmet for my Pillow. War is boredom preparing for the horrors of combat. Horrors so unimaginable that within hours a person's reality can be changed forever. It is also the building of camaraderie and the bonding of brotherhood that no other human experience can produce. Nicknames are forged both in friendship and derision as personalities clash in the extreme closeness of military tradition. The names are special and capsulate the essence of the person. Mr. Leckie is able to do all this in a well written memoir of his combat experiences at Guadalcanal, New Britain, and dreadful Peleliu. It is a read well worth your time.
Highly recommended and a must read for anyone interested in WW2. Be advised, this is a gritty combat memoir that portrays the brutality war at its worst.
