Book Review: Best photographic essay on Karajan to date
Summary: 5 Stars
This is an exhaustive photographic study of the great conductor, commencing with images from his childhood and finishing with the last one taken before his death. The focus is heavily on Karajan's professional career, although there are a number of personal photographs as well. Best of all, few have been seen before.
A comparison has been drawn between this book and another by Erich Lessing. There is no comparing the two as each covers an aspect of the conductor's life the other doesn't. Again, the presently reviewed title represents a complete life's work while the Lessing book focusing very intensely on the year 1957, with a plethora of images from performances and rehearsals from that time. If you can only afford one, I would recommend this title over Lessing's work; however, both are quite good and compliment each other admirably.
