Book Review: "Hero" is something new in gay fiction! I didn't think it was possible!

"Hero", especially the last few action packed chapters, is a strange little story that I found myself loving on so many levels! It's a coming-of-age story. It's a strained father-son relationship story. Its the story of a group of misfits who show the world they can do great things when they stick together. There are many layers to be revealed in "Hero", and new author Perry Moore takes great time and care to show us his comic book world with all its flash, excitement, and danger.
You never know what to expect from one chapter to the next, and this books plot moves along nicely. There are dozens of characters, most of them heroes, and Moore could produce his own Encyclopedia with all the characters and locations he has created here. It is a fully realized world where heroes fly the skies, and teens like the books main character Thom struggle to fit in as he deals with the results of a tragic accident involving his father, a disgraced former Hero.
The only slight problem I had with this book was the somewhat lazy parallels and aliases Moore thought up for his heroes. Speeding Bullet (The Flash), Warrior Woman (Wonder Woman), The Dark Hero (Batman), King of the Sea (Aquaman) and Justice (Superman) are all such transparent parodies I found it kind of lazy. Justice even has Superman's origin story! The young heroes and villains Moore creates are much more creative, even if the naming is hit and miss.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend "Hero" to young teens, because of the already mentioned swearing and sexual innuendo. Nothing too shocking, but not for young teens. On the flip side, I would recommend this book to anyone older and not just to teen readers. There is a great story in "Hero" and the young, and young-at-heart can enjoy it equally.
