The first 20 chapters were delightful I couldn't wait to share in the adventures of the lead character. The writer does an excellent job of weaving the history of that era through the pages. However, somewhere close to the middle of the book the characters started tripping onto historical events at every stop on their travels across the country.
By the time i reached last ten chapters I couldn't wait until I finished the book. The inserts of historical fact, intertwined with a good adventure story, that worked so well in the beginning became cheap little tricks by the author that were very predictable.
The pace of the book picked up in the last two chapters. It was like a race was on to pull all the characters together to make sense of the mess that had been created. The attempt to tie all the characters to each other, after the twist and turns the author needed to do to tie them to real historical events, just didn't work for me.
All that being said, I'm not sorry I read the book, it was very well written,there was just too much of it. If you have a lot of time, which I do, give it a chance.
