Book Reviews of High RiskBook Review: EMPATHY Summary: 5 Stars
This is one more wonderful tale by Rick R. Reed. I have had the good fortune to read nearly all of his works of art, and have enjoyed each one uniquely. I know he is an artist because he does not simply tell a tale that allows the reader to peek through a key hole and observe life in fiction, but he creates three dimensional characters for whom the reader feels empathy. Both the victim and the perp are equally interesting as each has been etched by the unfolding of their lives. I find Reed's tales to be like parables commenting on the shadow side of human experience
and causing the reader to not simply enjoy the work, but to be reflective on the meaning of human tragedy.
The sensitive and cultivated eye beholds the paintings of George Tooker or the illustrations of Norman Rockwell, and is captivated by the story behind the image, the meaning of the journey of those presented from an instant in their lives. Sometimes one confects a story in the mind to go with the image in the artwork. In Reed's tales the converse seems to be true. The clarity of the prose and the behaviors of the characters invite the reader to form strong images, and connective feelings. Among writers of horror, suspense, and mystery I find Mr. Reed to be one of the very best. It is a puzzle to me why he is not better known and more widely available.
The HIGH RISK tale begins with acting out as any of us might. Many of us take risks in relationships -- as is also depicted in IM, MUTE WITNESS, BASHED -- and hope that everything will work out in due time, be that short or elongated. There is, however, a little voice inside that warns us that this may not be the most prudent thing to do. Its a revelation of experience that not everyone is nice or thinks as I do, for example. From that point of view, Reed spins his yarn.
The only thing I found confusing was that part of the story which takes place near Myers Lake near Canton in Ohio. In the novel Myers Lake seems to be located near Youngstown or Warren. Odd for me! Do not, however, let geographical uncertainty stop your reading. Once you begin it will be difficult to stop. The only mystery left for me is why everyone does not read all the works of Rick R. Reed: HIGH RISK is one of his best.
