Book Review: Interesting, but probably not for the reason the author envisaged
Summary: 3 Stars
The review is 100% correct when it states the atmosphere conjured up in this book is superb.
However, I can't help but feel the sympathetic treatment of Ms Meaker's story is somewhat misplaced. The overriding impression I gained was that she had effectively platzed herself on Highsmith, who initially was not at all interested but had the good manners not to tell her to bog off. I'm afraid, for me, Highsmith was much the more sympathetic character; and the difference between the thinking of the European intelligentsia (to which Highsmith undeniably belonged, despite being nominally American) and the rather more naive US intellectualism represented by Meaker is what was fundamentally the problem with their relationship, such as it was.
In summary, I enjoyed the book immensely, but detested Marijane Meaker.
