Book Review: Absolutely beautiful art and a nice slice of SF storytelling

This is the follow-up to Hip Flask: Unnatural Selection (so if you're interested in this, go buy that first), and as with that former volume, the most compelling thing about this lovely hardback book is Ladronn's wonderful artwork. Comparisons have been made between Ladronn's depiction of the world of the Elephantmen and Ridley Scott's Bladerunner, and it's easy to understand why as the director and the artist have the same eye for superb detail and are equally good at depicting a rain-drenched and slightly dystopian future city. There is much to enjoy here if you are the kind of reader who enjoys a slow pace, a nice slice of characterisation and some wonderfully realised SF staples (anthropomorphic animals bred for warfare, flying cars, time travel, etc.). The concept of the Elephantmen - genetically engineered hybrids of men and animal made up of African animals, such as elephants, rhinos, crocodiles and hippos, etc. - is excellently realised, and there is much potential here (which, of course, led to the spin-off graphic novel series, Elephantmen). These two volumes are a little pricey, but the large size hardback format (around 7 CM more in height than the average paperback graphic novel) really makes them something sumptuous and a little special and, all in all, although the ride is over fairly quickly (this volume only being 94 pages long), it's a quality ride and I certainly don't regret spending the money. I think I've probably taken just as long admiring these pages as Ladronn took to paint them.
