On a college campus near Fort Hood, the U.S.'s largest army base, two young military wives, their husbands in Iraq, wept as they listened to Dr. Evelyn Sweet-Hurd read and discuss passages from her book His Name Was Donn. Theirs were not the only damp eyes in the crowd. During the question/answer time, both women told the author how much the book had meant to them, how much it meant to know that other people understood and lived the fears they endure every day, how they understood Donn's struggle to maintain ties with the normal, everyday life he'd left behind.
If you read this book expecting Donn to be Wilfred Owen or Siegfried Sassoon, you may be disappointed, and you will have missed the point.
Donn is Everyman, or perhaps Everyboy, still trailing clouds of his youth when his life ended. No one will ever know the mature adult he could have become. We know he was man enough to be awarded the Silver Star, to sacrifice his life for his men. We know, through this book, that he was the all-American boy next door. He loved his mom, his car, and peanut butter. And we all personally know one of the thousands of men and women he represents.
That is the point--that his death diminishes me. His death, and each death it represents, hits with the initial impact of a rock against a windshield, violent and loud. Then, over time, quietly, insidiously, the cracks begin to spread in a destructive web, first through family and friends, then touching parts of the human fabric far removed from the initial blow. How many such blows can we endure before the fabric of our society, our humanity, crumbles?
