Book Review: A Fresh Perspective
Summary: 3 Stars
This book definitely gives a fresh and convincing perspective on the problems facing today's parents. When I read the authors' theory that "peer orientation" and "peer dependency" are at the root of so many parenting difficulties, it made a lot of sense. However, they also present "attachment" as though it is the fix for all parenting problems. The authors dismiss using punishment and rewards as well, basically stating these are the methods of last resort.
More troubling is the authors' take on the school bullying epidemic. They insightfully state that a peer oriented environment breeds bullying. However, they are also very dismissive of the effects bullying has on the victims. Their solution is that if the child being bullied is parent-oriented, the child will get through it and be OK. They also go so far as to say that anti-bullying programs in schools are practically useless. I found this quite offensive to targets of bullies.
Overall, I liked the original theory they presented, but found that it lacked practical solutions and tended to oversimplify everything.
