Book Review: Gem or Rhinestone?

So we all know that Bob Dylan is not only revered as a song writer but also as a poet yet how many are familiar with his published poetry/prose. Tarantula, Bob's only other poetry/prose book was written by him in 1966, a time that many consider to have been his creative peak - Think about it kid, but don't ask no spider.
The suite of 23 poems contained in this book (Hollywood Foto-Retoric} were written by Bob in 1964 i.e. prior to Tarantula. The poems were lost for years until Barry Feinstein, the photographer, came across them and in consultation with Bob considered them to be a good idea for a book - Think about it kid, but don't ask no consultant.
The book contains no photos of Bob other than one on the inside back of the dust jacket. I personally find the photographs in this book pretty non de script. However, they are brought to life and become of interest with Bob's poetic, none descriptive, response to the images. Bob's poetry seems to come from within the photographs. Fans will recognise Bob's sense of humour, his verbal energy, cadence, use of slang, surrealism, and occasional insinuating tone - Think about it kid, but don't ask no ism.
None of the images or poems have titles and many people could be at a loss as to what the image represents. You may need access to an older person who was 'there' in the 60's - Think about it kid, but don't ask no kid.
So, Dylan's second published book of poetry is it a Gem or a Rhinestone? For me, the pictures would not work without the poetry, but together, I quite like it. As an ardent fan, any material penned by Dylan is of great interest. I'm not sure that I could stretch to Gem but it is interesting - think, but don't ask no rhino.
I'll leave the final word to Bob Dylan with the following quote:.
"It's the difference between the words on paper and those in a song. The song disappears into the air, the paper stays."
