Brittany, early 1600s. Juliette has lived at the Abbey of Saint-Marie-de-la-mer with her young daughter Fleur for some time now. It is the best shelter she has been in since fleeing her somewhat colorful yet dangerous life as an acrobatic gypsy, where, along with various dwarves and some other eccentric characters, she had turned tricks for money. Guy LeMerle, her lover and once respected member of the French nobility, manipulated every trick. But now that the abbey is in danger of closing its doors, and France in a political uproar, Juliette is afraid of finding LeMerle again. Why is she afraid of him? What was her past really like? And why is she seeking refuge at a place where she has no faith in? But Juliette is not the only one in the same situation at the abbey. It seems like all of the women there are running away from something. Faith plays no part in it. "It begins with the players." It appears that playing a role is vital when survival is the game...
Joanne Harris seems to be quite a versatile writer. I've only read one other book of hers, Gentlemen and Players, and that book was so full of shocking surprises and twists that I just had to read another effort by this author. The content in Holy Fools is quite risky. The Catholic church is satirized and scrutinized in this book, providing quite an interesting backdrop. Catholics and Christians in general will have to read this with an open mind. Some Catholics might even find some of the passages offensive. I will leave it up to the reader if this is a book he or she should read. It was an acquiring taste for me, which is why I give it three and a half stars. I had a hard time reading it in certain areas, but I won't go into it because it would contain spoilers. In spite of that, however, I couldn't put the book down. The narrative is captivating and the setting of seventeenth century France is well researched. Holy Fools is definitely an interesting novel. If you're a Joanne Harris fan, then you'll probably want to get this one.
