Book Reviews of HoopsBook Review: Brandon's review Summary: 4 Stars
I liked this book because it was a great story about basketball and it had an awesome ending.
Lonnie doesn't really like living with his mom so he goes to the Grant a lot which is a hotel. He looks out his window at the Grant and sees a liquor store getting robbed. He goes down and steals a 12 pack from the liquor truck thinking that he will make a few dollars selling the liquor. Lonnie goes to a basketball court the next day. He sees this guy laying down on the court and he is drunk. Lonnie enters in a basketball tournament with a few of his friends and the drunk guy is his coach. His name is Cal. A couple of days later, Lonnie goes to the Center which is the hangout place for him and his friends. Cal comes so Lonnie takes out a .32 pistol but accidentally shoots his hand. They have their first game and lose by 6. Lonnie takes Mary-Ann to meet Cal. Mary-Ann is Paul's sister and Paul is best friends with Lonnie. Mary- Ann is also the girl that Lonnie likes. Lonnie goes to Aggies house with Cal. Aggie is Cal's girl. Lonnie sees Mary-Ann the next day. She got slapped by Paul. They go to the night club that Mary-Ann works at and steal a ton of checks in an envelope with Paul's name on it. It was $160 worth. They throw them out because the club stole them from other people. Then Paul and Lonnie have a fight. This guy O'Donnel doesn't want Cal coaching in the tournament. But Cal still does. Someone broke into the center the next day and and the pet parakeet who was in the office dies from everything going everywhere. Cal went to jail for beating up a guy. They bailed him out later. Then they have another game and lose because Lonnie got kicked out for getting 2 technical fouls. Cal told Lonnie that he wasn't coaching anymore after he got out of jail. They win their next 2 games without Cal. Cal comes back to coach and O'Donnel says that Lonnie can't play in the championship game. In the game, Jo-Jo fouls out. He puts Lonnie. O'Donnel comes over and says " What are you doing?" Cal says, "This is the championship game. Don't you think it's time the champions should start playing?" In the end they win the game 93-92 because Lonnie stole the ball and passed it to Breeze and he hit a jump shot at the buzzer. Then Cal goes into the locker room with these guys and starts getting beat up. Lonnie goes after him to help him. Want to know what happens to Cal? Read the book and find out.
I think that realistic fiction readers and people who like basketball because it is a great basketball story and it could really happen.
Book Review: Compelling story of the value of true freindship. Summary: 4 Stars
The story of a young untapped tallent Lonnie jackson learns the lesons of life through his only love Basketball. Cal who is a ex-basketball star plays the role of mentor to young Jackson teaching him the naked truth about the world...it is a cold one. Through the common bond of basketball Cal and Lonnie explore each other, Cal seeing Lonnie as a chance maybe to regain some pride within himself takes the job as coach of a neighboorhood team in a tornament geared to offr the kids a chance to showcase their talents...there is only one problem Cal's past is so dark and murky that the leaders of the tornament don't want him in it. Cal was once regarded as one of the top ball players in the nation on the court his prowless was second to none. Off the court Cal had a bit of a gambling problem and was kicked out of the pro's for "selling his game". Lonnie is a young man 17 years old without much direction to what he is going to do with his life...as most young men lonnie is forced to grow up fast, real fast. Lonnie is one of the more typical kids in the nieghborhood, he likes to chase girls (one in paticular), hang out with friends, works a liitle part time job, has scuffles with his mother, just the typical teenager right..? wrong, lonnie has one of the nicest games on him around. he has a perfect build for the game and talent... tons of it, but the one thing he has the most aboundance of and doesn't relize it (as most young people) is potential. The phrase "you can do anything you put your mind to" is one that tends to be abit misleading. I believe it should be a bit more like, "you can do anything you put your mind to, if you have the guidance". This holds true in life as well as in the story. Walter Dean Meyers is well known for his novels about the hardships of being a young black man in America, but always finds a way to teach some life lesson that we all can apply to our everyday lives!
Book Review: GETS TO YA! Summary: 5 Stars
(im 13, not 12) well first off the start of the book isnt really that interesting, until Lonnie and Cal get closer, it book starts to have some action in it. i admire the way the dialog of the story takes, like how they would say "split", or "cat", like those kinna typa slang in it. it makes tha book more interesting. i like the way it also describes the relationship between Lonnie and Mary-ann. but i wish there were more to it though. some parts of the book are funny. there are a lot of parts that you wouldn't epect to happen, like in the end. its was un expected. then at the end of the book, i thought there would be more, but it was the end. i think i need to read "the outside shot" because its the part 2 of hoops. o yea and its a good book if u like basket ball hoops is probably one of the best books i read. i think it should be made to a movie because from the way i read it, its like a movie in my mind. so yea, i really recommend this book it GETS TO YA! ~one
