Book Review: Great book!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

It is one of the best books I've ever read. Whoever loves basketball this is a great book to read. Its about a kid named Lonnie and his passion for the game of basketball. Lonnie and his friends are looking for a coach to coach there team. A guy named Cal wants to coach but Lonnie won't let him. Cal says if u beat me I wont be you're coach, but if I win I am you're coach. Lonnie loses and that is the start of a great friendship.

Some good and bad things are happening to Lonnie. Lonnie is the star on the team and all the scouts are watching him. The problem is that there not winning games. Cal really thinks that Lonnie has a chance in the pro's and he doesn't want Lonnie to blow it like he did for himself.

As the big tourney comes near Lonnie finds out, bettors want Cal to blow the game for the team and lose the Championship. As the last seconds are ticking off the clock Cal and Lonnie have a huge decision to make. Do they win and become heroes or blow it in front of everyone. I love this book because every part was great and I didn't want to put it down.

Book Review: HOOPS
Summary: 4 Stars

You think your life is tough? Well, look at the life of a teenager growing up in New York City. Walter Dean Meyers takes you to these streets in Hoops.

Lonnie and his friends enter in a basketball tournament. However, to Lonnie's dislike, their coach is a man who he sees drunk a couple nights before the tournament. To his surprise, the coach, Cal, is a former pro basketball player. Ultimately, Cal, Lonnie and the rest of the team overcome many obstacles to win the tournament.

One strength of this book is that it is very suspenseful; after the first few chapters I couldn't put it down. For example, at the end of a chapter it says, "Tomorrow we would play against Boston," and I wanted to find out what happens at the game.

A weakness of this book is that it has a slow beginning, and it takes a while for it to get interesting. The first chapter only talks about what Lonnie's life is like and that is not very interesting.

Hoops is a good book, but part of the reason I enjoy playing basketball. For someone who does not really like or even hates basketball, this book is a bad choice.

I recommend this book to teenagers or preteens because the main characters are all teenagers. If a ten year old reads this book, he may have a hard time understanding the concepts.

Book Review: HOOPS is wicked!
Summary: 4 Stars

Hoops is a about a kid who loves basketball and has bad grades. He lives in a big city with lots of drugs. His friend gets caught with drugs. The main character tries to help his friend get straightened out, but he's the one who gets in trouble with the cops. This book is great because the main character loves to play basketball like me. He also has issues with his grades like me. It's a really good book about friendship and helping friends. Any boy interested in basketball would like this book.

Book Review: Hoops
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally had to read "Hoops" for a summer reading assignment for my English class. Then after the first two chapters I couldn't wait to read another page. Walter Dean Myers is one of my favorite authors, he always writes great books and I'm always pleased with his work. "Hoops" is one of the best books I've ever held in my hands. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat, you find yourself reading faster and faster, so anxious to turn the next page.

Even if you're not a basketball fan, if you like reading, you're going to love this book. Basketball is not what this story is about. It's about an eighteen year old boy, Lenny, born and raised on the street and the only thing he knows is the game of basketball. There are so many in depth characters in the story. There are twists and turns to keep you off guard. There is a love affair, a person with drinking and responsibility issues, and Lenny has an impact on everybody in the story. Lenny also evolves during the story, starting out as the most selfish person on the face of the earth, thinking he was the greatest thing to ever hit the game of basketball. By the end of the story, he turned into a caring, compassionate, and helpful person who worked out problems instead of causing them.

Walter Dean Myers has outdone himself. This is quite possibly the greatest book ever written about basketball. If I were Ebert and Roeper I would give this book two thumbs up, way up. It's a five star, A+ book. All I can say is, it is a great book and worth your money to buy it.

Book Review: Hoops
Summary: 2 Stars

The book is written in first person. Lonnie's thoughts are given. I felt like the book was so hard to understand cause there was so much slang "I really hates you your feets to big." I actully could kinda understand what they were saying but it didnt really make any sense. I couldn't relate to it that much.I'm not sure if anyone would enjoy this book unless they talk like that. It wasn't just the slang, it was the whole writting. Everthing just ran together when I read it. I really couldn't tell what the setting was. I think it was in the streets of New york or some place like that. The plot in this story is that Lonnie is trying to make the NBA while that is going on he starts to like his friends sister mary-ann.I recommend this book to guys mostly cause they might understand the point of view of Lonnie cause hes a guy.
