Book Review: A Beguiling Classic and an Outstanding Testament to this Genre

I have been enamored with Quinn Yarbro's Le Comte de Saint-Germain series since 1979; this is the novel that started me on my vampire fixation. This protagonist is a vampire and he is the ultimate example of any contemporary vampire. It was the Saint-Germain vampire novels that strongly influenced this vampire/supernatural literary genre in the first place.
Saint Germain is truly a heroic figure, he is courtly, a sophisticated gentleman, and has walked the earth for over four thousand years. He is no creature slinking among humans in the night; he is a day walker (courtesy of lining his shoes with soil from his homeland). Fans of Anne Rice's or LKH will be disappointed because there is no horror, violence, gore, debauchery here.
Ms. Yarbro does an outstanding job of creating a fascinating image of Paris in the mid-1700's. She describes in vivid detail the times, places, dialogue, clothing, sights, and smells of this city. The St.-Germain character was actually modeled after a real person of the same name.
This novel is not for the flippant reader just looking for a supernatural thrill ride, Ms. Yarbro's le Comte de Saint-Germain novels are a challenge to read. She is a master at writing historical fiction, her research is impeccable, her characters are fascinating, and the narrative is rich in detail. I have all of Yarbro's St.-Germain novels and enjoy re-reading them. This first novel is splendid reading and I have fallen in love with le Comte all over again.
