Book Review: A Good Discussion Starter

Many people believe that what happens after death is solely dependent on doing good things. In this book, Since Nobody's Perfect...How Good is Good Enough?, Andy Stanley takes 92 concise pages to address this specific topic from the Christian perspective.
A good bit of the book tackles the problems found in a "all good people go to heaven" mentality and if you have been in Christian circles for very long you have heard many of them. They are sound arguments and good challenges for many who base their eternity on their "good" actions. He spends most of this section of the book arguing from a non-Christian point of view strictly looking at how no religion can truly pin down what it means to be good enough to earn a spot in heaven.
Stanley then turns a corner and begins pointing toward Jesus and the cross as an alternative to the "good enough" model. He argues that Jesus himself did not hold to a "good enough" model of getting to heaven. Jesus would tell the dregs of society that their sins were forgiven while at the same time raising the standard of the Old Testament law and telling the Pharisees they weren't living "good enough." (page 53)
Stanley's book concludes by addressing how many people might argue that Jesus being the only way to get to heaven is unfair. Stanley claims that God went "beyond fair" in choosing mercy and love over giving us what we deserve.
My biggest disappointment with the book is that Stanley encourages the reader to say a prayer of belief in Jesus at the close of the book but does not encourage the reader to find a local community of believers in which to become a part. This book is a journey starter for the reader and they are going to need Christian community to surround them on the coming journey. He lists a website for further help after the prayer but I was disappointed to find it was linked to North Point's, Stanley's church, store page.
Overall, this book could be good for the church looking for outreach resources. Just know that it will need to be followed up with engagement in a community of believers.
