Book Review: Very AmericaniZed, but unmissable for the UK privacy seeker.

This fascinating book is widely regarded as the superlative on personal privacy, and not without good reason. The author provides a multitude of compelling reasons why one should safeguard one's privacy and then proceeds to enumerate tried-and-proven methods of doing so. Beginning with his two fundamental maxims (1. It's okay (he insists) to lie in certain circumstances and 2. Never allow your real name to be connected to your home address), he expounds the merits of ghost addresses, alternative names & signatures, the privacy risks entailed in telephone and email communications, the use of nominees, secret rooms and many other initiatives to become invisible within the law.
However, I had a few gripes. For one, this book is written for an American readership, which at times can grate with the European eye - it is assumed you will know what a CPA is, or be familiar with the procedures for registering a car in the United States. Does the advice on establishing New Mexico-based LLCs (for purposes of asset ownership) apply to Europeans? The unavoidable focus on US Social Security Numbers just passes us by, although this will change when the UK's new National Information Register and concomitant Identity Card come into full force, by which time many of the devices suggested in the book will be impracticable, unless one is willing to break the law. I conveyed some of these reservations to the author via his web site, but I felt his reaction was disappointingly dismissive and just a little arrogant.
Another gripe I had was the book's unashamedly anti-offshore bias. Sure, many of the "offshoreistas" may be slightly naughty as it were, but there are good reasons why the privacy-seeker / libertarian should consider offshore banking and / or residency. Somewhat ironically, the author himself lives a millionaire lifestyle in the Canary Islands, although he doesn't encourage pursuit of great wealth either...
A final annoyance I had was his advocacy of placing confidence for certain tasks in members of groups such as "Jehovah's Witnesses" or Mormons, as though such people are virtually incapable of impropriety; yet my own experience with a JW uncle contradicts this highly dubious advice.
Despite my personal gripes, I must concede there is much gold in this book, although as the encroaching Big Brother states throughout the western world grow ever more intrusive, it will inevitably become harder to implement the good ideas contained therein. Nevertheless, if you care at all about your privacy, this book is a must-have, no matter what side of the Atlantic you live on.
