Book Reviews of How to Build an A

Book Review: Great fun way to learn more than just letters!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is educational in so many ways..... and my 3-yr-old granddaughter loves it. It's not been used in a structured way -- she brings it to us and asks us to play with her and she directs the play. We "copy" the letters, count the pieces used, talk about words and phonics, etc.

Book Review: Great idea!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a really cool idea. My 4 yr old loves to sit and go thru it making each letter. Not too difficult, but challenging :)

Book Review: Great pre-writing tool
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderful foam shapes teach your child how to form letters before they are able to write. Similar to Handwriting Without Tears wood shapes teaching.

Book Review: How to Build an A
Summary: 5 Stars

The two year old boy I babysit absolutely loves using the foam pieces to build the alphabet. The pieces are large and sturdy so it is easy for his small hands to arrange them to make the letters. As soon as I get to his house, he often says, "Let's build letters."

Book Review: More emphasis on illustrations than building letters
Summary: 3 Stars

I was excited when I saw the book as my almost 4 year old wants to learn to write his name and loves to play with our handwriting without tears set and this seem like a well designed more portable item for him to bring around to play with while waiting on big brother (as a younger sibling he's got to hang at cub scout meetings and OT appts each week). The book comes with a small blue bag that holds all of the foam pieces, nice idea, and the paper while not board book material is a thicker cardstock. I suspect it would hold up over time although board book material would have been nicer.

However, aside from the fact that it seems like a total rip off of handwriting without tears, the actual building of the letter is a small picture in bottom right corner of the left page (approx 2" in size) with a sentence like "A is for apple" and "B is for boy" dominating the left page and then these very pretty illustrations filling the right page, so the actual illustration of the apple, while quite nicely illustrated, is the emphasis of the book NOT BUILDING THE LETTERS (approximately 2" in size). That would be fine, but looking at the title page, I had a different belief as to the emphasis of the book. Furthermore, the smaller curves are so large if your child tries to create a capital B the humps are too big so the letter looks broken which totally annoyed my son who is used to using the wood pieces that are scaled better.
