Book Review: Slightly disappointing and full of babble

When the book arrived in my bookshop, I bought it nearly instantly. I had found "The Western Canon" somehow thought-provoking, but still I needed another go. "How to read and why" does not teach us (neither advises us, nor leads us) to read, and never even explains why. The real title of the book should be something like "Shakespeare's greatness among everyone else", since that is the only topic he really deals with. Page after page, chapter after chapter, all he does is selecting a series of titles (of course, canonised ones!) and tries to convince us to read them and to compare them to the English Bard. On second thoughts, the title could also be: "What to read". On what grounds does the author decide what are the greatest works of literature, and how does he convince the reader? He does neither. Little explanation and little clarity prevails in this work, and it also has a repetitive nuance which makes you put down your book and try to forget about having acquired it.
