Don't waste your time on the "Essential Howard The Duck" paperbacks (in tawdry black and white; so I believe), this here's the real deal. Nearly every single appearance of Howard is here, all reproduced in glorious colour and bound chronologically within a vast weighty tome that will dwarf any other book on your shelves. Be warned; this is not a book you can comfortably hold while reading..it needs a supporting surface!
Starting with Howard's unfortunate dimensional displacement we visit the genius satirical mind of the late lamented Steve Gerber and take a truly surreal journey through the diseased soul of 1970s America. Nothing is sacred or safe from Howard's outspoken commentary and observations about this imperfect madhouse of a "world he never made".
Joining him on this journey are the ever-gorgeous Beverly Switzler, her upstairs neighbour Paul, the "KISS" possessed Winda Wester and a host of serio-comic heroes and villains from the fabulously inspired Kidney Lady to the unrequited Dr Bong and his mysterious island. We travel with Howard through hallucinatory landscapes, run for president on a "tell like it is" ticket, spend time committed within a mental institution, watch him become the Son Of Satan, face dark interdimensional forces, become human and even relive the drama of the infamous "missed deadline issue"
If you want familiar Marvel superheroes then you'll find them here (including Spiderman, Man-Thing, Dr Strange and The Defenders) but possibly not in the way you'd expect. This series uses all the cliched tricks of comic book marketing, the team-up, the guest appearance, the hero vs hero fight but also successfully parodies every single one and holds them up to a somewhat merciless scrutiny.
Much more than a comic book this is one of the first true subversions of mainstream comics using themes and techniques we nowadays associate with the likes of Grant Morrison and Alan Moore.
