It's been three months since the barrier appeared. At first it was a free-for-all but now they're paying the price. Food is running out and kids are becoming desperate. More kids are starting to develop strange powers - and the animals, too - but there's tension between the "normals" and the "freaks." Sam is trying to be Mayor and parent to everyone and solve every little problem and being stretched too thin. Everyone is at the breaking point. But the kids aren't the only ones who're hungry. The Darkness underground wants to be fed, too.
In this sequel to Gone we learn a little more about what's going on in the FAYZ but still nothing about the outside world... if it's still there. Maybe it's just been too long since I read the first book (last summer) but I had a harder time getting into this one, but once you really get there you just can't put it down until the end (my lunch break went really long today). I was disappointed that there seems to be more profanity in this one (something I appreciated about the first book) and the violence escalates even more. It's a scary new world these kids find themselves in, so it's definitely a series for the older kids. But it was still a lot of fun to read. Hopefully the next book won't take as long in coming out.
